What is a water distribution system?

A water distribution system is the network of pumps, storage tanks, mains, valves, and service lines that carries treated drinking water from the plant to homes and businesses. Its job is to keep clean water moving at safe pressure with no chance for contamination to get back in.

What it includes

The system runs from the point treated water leaves the plant to the customer's meter. It includes pumps that add pressure, storage tanks that hold a reserve, water mains that carry the flow, and valves and hydrants used to control and flush it.

What the operator protects

The two daily goals are enough pressure everywhere and no contamination. Keeping pressure up, keeping a disinfectant residual in the water, and stopping backflow through cross-connections are how an operator keeps distributed water safe.
