What is grit removal?

Grit removal takes out the heavy sand, gravel, and small dense particles that come in with wastewater, early in preliminary treatment. Removing grit protects pumps and equipment from wear and keeps it from settling in tanks downstream. It is separated by slowing the flow so only the heavy grit drops out.
