How to calculate the area of a circle (the 0.785 method)
Round tanks, clarifiers, and pipes are circles, so you need the area of a circle a lot. The operator shortcut uses 0.785 and the diameter, so you never have to remember pi or the radius.

The formula
area (sq ft) = 0.785 x diameter x diameter
The steps
Use the diameter, not the radius
The 0.785 shortcut is built for the diameter, so you measure straight across the circle.
Multiply
Multiply 0.785 by the diameter, then by the diameter again. The answer is the area in square feet.
Worked example
A round clarifier is 20 feet across. What is its surface area?
- Area: 0.785 x 20 x 20 = 314 square feet
Answer: 314 square feet
