How to convert pressure and head (psi and feet)

Water height and pressure are two ways of saying the same thing. To turn feet of water into psi, multiply by 0.433. To turn psi into feet of head, multiply by 2.31.

Last reviewed 2026-08-04

The formula

psi = feet x 0.433 | feet = psi x 2.31

The steps

  1. Feet to psi

    Each foot of water makes about 0.433 psi, so multiply the height in feet by 0.433.

  2. Psi to feet

    Going the other way, multiply the psi by 2.31 to get feet of head.

  3. Check the direction

    Feet is always the bigger number and psi the smaller, because 0.433 is less than 1 and 2.31 is more than 1.

Worked example

How much pressure does 92 feet of water make?

  1. 92 x 0.433 = 39.8

Answer: About 39.8 psi

Common questions

Which number turns feet into psi?
0.433. Multiply the feet by 0.433 to get psi.
Which number turns psi into feet?
