Texas wastewater operator license classes
Texas wastewater operator licenses run from Class D up to Class A. The grade you hold decides how large and how complex a facility you can operate. Class D is the entry point, and each step up asks for more experience and its own exam.
Class D
Entry levelWhere most operators start. No prior work experience is required. You need a high school diploma or GED, the approved Class D course, and a passing score on the Class D wastewater exam. It fits smaller facilities.
Class C
Next step upThe next grade. It calls for hands-on operating experience and its own exam, and it is needed to run larger or more involved facilities than Class D covers.
Class B
Higher gradeA higher grade for larger facilities, with more required experience and a more demanding exam than Class C.
Class A
Top gradeThe top grade, for the largest and most complex treatment facilities and the most operating experience.
How you move up
Grades rise with facility size and complexity and with the experience you build on the job. Each higher grade has its own exam. The exact experience and education for Class C and above are set by the TCEQ, so check their licensing page for the current numbers rather than trust a figure from memory.
