What is turbidity?
Turbidity is how cloudy or hazy water is, caused by tiny suspended particles like clay, silt, algae, and organic matter. It is measured in NTU, or nephelometric turbidity units. It matters because those particles can shield bacteria and viruses from disinfection, so cloudy water is harder to make safe.
Why turbidity matters
Turbidity is not just a looks problem. The suspended particles give germs a place to hide from chlorine, so water that is too cloudy can pass through disinfection with pathogens still alive. That is why drinking-water rules set turbidity limits for filtered surface water, and why operators watch it constantly. A sudden rise in turbidity is also an early warning that something upstream in the treatment train is not working the way it should.
How operators lower it
Cloudy water is cleared in steps. Coagulation adds a chemical that makes the tiny particles clump. Flocculation gently grows those clumps into heavier floc. Sedimentation lets the floc settle out in a basin. Filtration then strains out what is left. Each step removes more, and the turbidity reading is how the operator checks that the train is doing its job.
