What is a thrust block?

A thrust block is a mass of concrete poured behind a fitting where a pressurized water main changes direction, such as a bend, tee, or dead end. It holds the fitting in place against the thrust force that pressure creates, so joints do not pull apart.

Why thrust happens

Water under pressure pushes outward everywhere. On a straight pipe the forces balance, but at a bend, tee, or dead end they do not, so there is a net thrust trying to move the fitting and pull the joints apart.

How the block resists it

A thrust block transfers that force into the undisturbed soil behind the fitting, holding it in place. Blocks belong at direction changes and dead ends, not on straight runs where the forces already balance.
