How to calculate hydraulic loading rate
Hydraulic loading rate is how much flow a treatment unit handles for its size. You find it by dividing the flow by the surface area, which tells the operator whether a unit is overloaded.

hydraulic loading = flow (gpd) / surface area (sq ft)
The steps
Match the units
Use flow in gallons per day and area in square feet. The answer is gallons per day per square foot.
Divide
Divide the flow by the surface area of the unit.
Worked example
A unit takes 100,000 gallons per day and has 500 square feet of surface. What is the hydraulic loading?
- 100,000 / 500 = 200 gpd per square foot
