Write what you know
flow = 1,000 GPM • 1 day = 1,440 minutes
- 1,000 gallons every minute.
- 1,440 minutes in a day.
- Multiply to get gallons per day.

Multiply by 1,440
GPD = 1,000 × 1,440 • GPD = 1,440,000
- 1,000 times 1,440.
- Multiplying by 1,000 adds three zeros.
- So 1,440 becomes 1,440,000 gallons per day.
Quick trick: That is also 1.44 MGD, since a million goes into it 1.44 times.
Remember this for good
Per minute to per day: multiply by 1,440, the minutes in a day.
1,000 GPM times 1,440 is just 1,440 with three zeros added: 1,440,000 GPD. That is also 1.44 MGD.
Solve it fast next time
- GPM to GPD: multiply by 1,440.
- Multiplying 1,000 by anything just adds three zeros.
- 1,440,000 GPD is the same as 1.44 MGD.
